Some Breckenridge History

With the celebration of Breckenridge's 150th anniversary taking place throughout 2009, it is important to reflect on the history, events and characters that shaped the town into the unique place it is know and loved for today.

Hundreds of years ago Breckenridge was home to the Nomadic Ute Indians. Wildlife, including moose, elk, deer, bears, cougars and many other wild animals inhabited the land.

There was Father John Lewis Dyer, the Methodist circuit-riding preacher who traveled on 12-foot-long wooden skis in the 1860s to serve as a minister to the area’s wild and wooly mining camps. Or Barney Ford, an escaped slave who became one of the most prosperous men in Breckenridge with investments in mining, real estate, restaurants and hotels. Or Tom Groves, who discovered the largest gold nugget in Colorado history, the 13.5 pound “Tom’s Baby” that was essentially kidnapped for 100 years before it turned up in a Denver Bank in 1972. When the mining days began to wane, another discovery known as "White Gold,” came into formation – the 300 plus inches of snow that fall on the town each year. In 1961 the first run was open on Peak 8, which soon put Breckenridge on the map as a top skiing destination.

Today Breckenridge provides world-class skiing and snowboarding as well as a plethora of other winter and summer activities. Many of the original buildings from the mining era are still standing today: the building that housed the first newspaper founded 120 years ago, the 1860 "Choy Laundryman's Chinese Laundry" and the "Gold Pan Saloon," built in 1870, one of the oldest bars west of the Mississippi.

In 1859 a small mining camp was started by General George E. Spencer, 28 men and one lone woman. The town’s gold rush brought settlers in droves seeking their fortunes. The next 100 years in Breckenridge history was packed with gold finds and mining, exploration and adventure, brothels and saloons, booms and busts.
