Mammoth Cave — The Longest Cave in the World

Mammoth Cave is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the United States and Kentucky's number one tourist spot, and with no wonder — it is the longest recorded cave system in the world, featuring more than 350 miles of mapped caves — longer than the distance between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. A visit to Mammoth Cave National Park is an experience that will last a lifetime, and Mammoth Cave Hotel is open year-round to provide guests accommodations with convenient access to the entrance and National Park Visitor Center.

Mammoth Cave National Park - A UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve

In 1981, Mammoth Cave National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which now includes more than 800 properties which the World Heritage Committee identifies as having "outstanding universal value." To remain a World Heritage Site, the park must implement programs to protect and cherish the site, including conservation and research, as well as educate the public on the importance of the site. Ranger-led activities are offered year-round and include nature walks, slide presentations and, of course, cave tours.

While Mammoth Cave is the best-known feature of the park, there are also hills, bluffs and forests that make up the remaining 52,800 acres of the park. Over 30 miles of the Green and Nolin Rivers trace through the park, and 85 miles of backcountry forest trails allow visitors to discover the land that is home to a wide variety of plants and animals. As a matter of fact, Mammoth Cave National Park is home to over 70 threatened, endangered or threatened species, including plants. This led to the park being named an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990. This means that the operations of the park must contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of local communities and future generations.

A Plethora of Above Ground Activities

Mammoth Cave is one of the oldest tourist attractions in North America — tours have been offered since 1816. Ever since that first tour, Mammoth Cave Hotel has provided the finest southern hospitality for all visitors looking for accommodations in the Park. Mammoth Cave Hotel makes a great headquarters for anyone visiting the Bowling Green area. Generations of families have returned year after year to immerse themselves in a world Mother Nature took centuries to create. In addition to the cave tours, which range from a ¾ mile self-guided "Discovery Tour" to a six hour, 5½ mile "Wild Cave Tour" that features passages as tight as 9 inches high, Mammoth Cave National Park offers a wide variety of above-ground recreational activities. Guests can enjoy hiking or horseback riding in the rugged hills, exploring the deep valleys, or even playing in the water — by boating, canoeing or kayaking the Green or Nolin Rivers.

Mammoth Cave Hotel — Environmentally Responsible Since 2003

In 2003, Mammoth Cave Hotel was certified to ISO 14001. ISO 14001 is an internationally recognized standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and certification requires organizations control the impacts that their activities, products and services have on the environment. Implementing these standards not only demonstrates a commitment to environmental leadership, but also helps the hotel reduce energy and resource consumption, ensuring the Mammoth Cave Hotel will continue to provide accommodations to future generations.

In 2005, Mammoth Cave Hotel became a member of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Environmental Performance Track Program. This program is a partnership between the public and private sectors, recognizing top environmental performance. As a result of this program, Mammoth Cave Hotel has reduced the facility's total water use, increased the use of recycled paper products and remodeled guest rooms to become more energy and resource efficient. Future goals include reducing the amount of harsh chemical cleaners by replacing them with environmentally safe products, and further reducing the hotel's water use by 15% annually.

Finally, the Travertine Restaurant is a Certified Green Restaurant™. The restaurant does not use Styrofoam products and has completed 25 additional steps in the Green Restaurant Association'sSM environmental guidelines.
