Whitewater Rafting at its Best!

The ultimate Costa Rican Paradise is right at your fingertips. People travel to Costa Rica for a multitude of reasons, usually for some type of outdoor activity; be it nature tours, hiking, biking, etc. It is a little known fact, but Costa Rica has excellent rivers for white water rafting, including one of the top-rated wilderness experiences in the world: the Pacuare River. Enjoy peace and tranquility or fun in the sun on the Pacific coast with Costa Rica Nature Adventures.

Established in 1987, the company is one of the oldest and most respected tour operators in Costa Rica. A leader in the field of adventure travel, they offer a wide variety of services that include hotel accommodation, car rentals, white water rafting and some of Costa Rica's finest adventure tours. They are fully licensed by the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism, and have been granted a number of international awards highlighting their dedication to the environment.

The beautiful country of Costa Rica has something for everyone. Costa Rica Nature Adventures specialize in Class II, III & IV white-water rafting and river floating adventures along Costa Rica's most spectacular rivers.

Experience Costa Rican life to the fullest by staying in the privately owned and operated Pacuare Lodge, a magical jungle hideaway located on the banks of the Pacuare River. Costa Rica Nature Adventures takes pride in successfully combining extraordinary guest comfort and service with state-of-the art practices in sustainability and ecotourism. The Pacuare Lodge was recognized in 2003, by the World Tourism Organization as 1 of only 65 examples throughout the world good practice in sustainability and ecotourism.

In Harmony with Nature

From the beginning, Costa Rica Nature Adventures has continually strived to form relationships with companies that respect the environment. This is reflected in their choice of hotels and lodges, the people they hire, and the equipment they use.

The privately-owned Pacuare Lodge was built with a minimum impact on the river and rainforest site where it is located and is accessible only by boat or four-wheel drive vehicle. The lodge has no electricity—lanterns and candles provide light for guests and staff. No trees were cut on site of the primary rainforest to construct the lodge and bungalows. Wood for the bungalows was purchased from a sustainable reforestation project operated by and benefiting small local farmers.

Though any site will have some impact on the natural environment in which it is placed, the design and maintenance of the lodge have at their very core a commitment to minimally impact the environment while maximizing education and enjoyment!

More than Tourism

Consistent with their belief that responsible tourism should benefit and respect local communities, the Community Support Program works directly with people and institutions in the Pacuare area by providing economic assistance, improving and maintaining roads, and by coordinating the donation of economic resources and equipment. Costa Rica Nature Adventures also donates a percentage of each Internet reservation directly to the three primary schools located along the Pacuare River.

The Pacuare Lodge

The following four factors combine to make the Pacuare Lodge experience one of a kind:

  • An exhilarating white water river ride to the lodge
  • Its secluded location on the banks of Costa Rica's premier white water rafting river amid a virgin rainforest filled with an extraordinary variety of plant and animal species
  • A friendly and knowledgeable staff that ensures extraordinary guest comfort and service
  • A practical commitment to sustainability and ecotourism.

The Pacuare Lodge's philosophy of simplistic luxury and oneness with nature is enhanced by the romance of operating without electricity.  Our distinctive palm-thatched bungalows and suites are carefully designed to blend into the surrounding forest. Each features a canopy king size bed, hardwood flooring, private veranda, and a spacious private bathroom adorned with brass fixtures, private alfresco shower with solar heated water, and a nearly 360º rainforest view —all within an area seemingly removed from time and the worries of the outside world, yet just two and a half hours from San José, Costa Rica's capital city. Guests may choose from a luxurious Garden-view bungalow, River-view junior suite, or for an added touch of luxury, reserve the honeymoon suite.

Pacuare Lodge Adventures

Go on the Pacuare Adventure and spend the days soaking up the sun and beautiful surroundings while also learning about the area and culture through optional activities. Guests can take guided hikes through an emerald rainforest and take the Cabecar Indian Tour where they may participate in a cultural exchange with a shaman. Visitors may also glide amid a tropical rainforest canopy with the Pacuare Canopy Adventure Tour. All of the tours are guided by a resident naturalist who explains in detail the complex relationship and interactions between the rainforest’s many plant and animal species as well as providing insight into the traditions and culture of the local indigenous population.

Background Information

The vision for Pacuare Lodge came from Roberto Fernandez and Daniel Peyer.  Mr. Fernandez grew up in the Turrialba region, where the Pacuare River is located.  Before his work with the lodge, he was a researcher in tropical agriculture. Mr. Peyer was born and raised in Switzerland, where he worked in different areas of the tourism business (from operational levels to top management positions).  In 1987 the two founded Aventuras Naturales, one of the earliest companies to specialize in adventure travel. The company has operated continuously under this experienced management team for over 17 years.  Shortly after Aventuras Naturales was established, Mr. Fernandez and Mr. Peyer began envisioning the Pacuare Lodge project.  After careful planning, this dream became reality in the mid-1990s, with funds exclusively from the founders.
