Who Is Rogue Wilderness Adventures?

Rogue Wilderness Adventures is a unique river adventure tour company that is the gateway to the stunning and pristine Wild and Scenic Rogue River area of Oregon.  For over 34 years, Rogue Wilderness Adventures has fullfilled its purpose: To provide travelers with long- lasting memories, great friendships, and an outstanding adventure at an extraordinary value by offering unforgettable whitewater rafting, fishing, or hiking tours. Many a visitor has fallen in love with the Rogue River while standing on its banks. Novelist Zane Grey found this area of Oregon the inspiration for many of his western novels---in fact, the cabin where the writing took place still stands today.

Owner Brad Niva, who welcomes over 2,000 participants annually, is another man who became entranced with the wild and scenic river Rogue. In fact, his love of the outdoors and the beauty of the area are what motivates him to reach out and share this experience with others. His commitment to providing the best in outdoor recreation has made Rogue Wilderness Adventures world-famous in the outfitter business landscape with its commitment to personalized menus, great staff, and top-notch equipment.

Brad’s involvement in Rogue Wilderness Adventures began in 1998 when he was actually a guest with the tour company. A number of years later, Brad was leading his own private trip down the Rogue and had to catch an airplane to Dallas, Texas for a sales meeting. It was culture shock for Brad, and a life-changing experience--- just hours before he had been floating down one of the most beautiful rivers in the world---then, he was waiting for a connection in Las Vegas. The airport was packed, the flights were filled to capacity, and all Brad could think about was that he wanted to be back on the River. When he arrived in Dallas for his meeting, a motivational speaker named Pat Croce said to the crowd, “You have one life, just one. Go live it, you won’t get a second chance.” Brad was so inspired by this that when he got home, he told his wife about the experience, and how he felt about being on the Rogue River, and as a result, they bought the company.

Today, Brad is grateful for his life-changing decision. He has traded in his power suit for his shorts and sandals, and truly loves his chosen profession. According to Brad, “The biggest benefit of owning this company is the great people we get to meet every week. This summer we had a young family whose mother had survived breast cancer. The mother was in the mindset of living life to the fullest with her family. We felt blessed to be a part of their memory making trip. What a great job we have. We make great memories.”

Rogue Wilderness Adventures is the most diversified outfitting company on the Rogue River offering rafting and kayaking trips on both the recreation and wild sections of the Rogue River. In addition, they lead Rogue River hiking trips as well as Salmon and Steelhead fishing trips. Rogue Wilderness employs approximately 25-30 staff members each season.

Lodge to Lodge Hiking on the Rogue River Trail in Oregon

The Rogue River Canyon in Southern Oregon, famous for whitewater rafting and fishing, is home to one of the most unique hiking adventures in the country. In the mid 1800s, Chinese immigrant miners constructed a 44-mile trail along the Rogue River to provide access to key mining establishments in the canyon.  Knowing that this was such a key part of America's history only adds to the allure of taking a four-day lodge-to-lodge hiking getaway: Visitors will step out of civilization and into a secluded hiking trail in the Oregon wilderness---the same trail that has been used for over 100 years.

All of the details will be attended to so that visitors are free to enjoy getting a healthy dose of solitude, gaining new visual and emotional perspectives, and enjoying the magnificent scenery as well as the opportunity to spot rare wildlife. The Rogue Wilderness staff will deliver hikers to the trail head and provide a supply boat that carries hiking gear for all of the participants. Each evening, hikers will arrive at one of the historic lodges in the Rogue River Canyon and be greeted with a hot shower, a comfortable bed, and hearty meal. The Rogue Wilderness staff will deliver all luggage to the rooms of the participants at the lodge before they arrive. After a sumptuous breakfast, hikers depart for another day of adventure on the trail.

All hiking trips begin at the Grave Creek trail head located about 30 miles west of the town of Grants Pass, Oregon.  The trail from Grave Creek to Foster Bar is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service.  The elevation at the trail head is 689 feet and at Foster Bar, the elevation is 474 feet above sea level.  Generally speaking, hikers are walking down hill most of the way, and the trip will take at least 4 days and 3 nights. These hikes are only offered during the months of May and June.

Hikers are greeted by a Rogue Wilderness Adventures van and transported back to Merlin, Oregon. Rogue Wilderness also offers a shuttle service that delivers the hikers to the end of the trail. Many hikers may want to explore the Oregon coast 20 miles away or visit the Redwood Forest in Northern California 55 miles away.

The Rogue River is a Wild and Scenic river protected by an Act of Congress in 1969. All activities in the canyon are regulated with limited entry each day.

The Ultimate Fishing Weekend

Deep in the Siskyou Mountain range of Southern Oregon lies some of the best fishing in the lower 48 states. The wild and scenic Rogue River is home to Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Steelhead and the famous Rogue River "Half-Pounders". Fishing the Rogue River is a captivating experience of  both solitude and beauty, and Rogue River Wilderness has specialized in salmon fishing since the early 1970s.

Spectacular scenery, thrilling whitewater, and fantastic weather makes this an unforgettable fishing adventure. The staff of seasoned guides are experts in a variety of Salmon fishing techniques: fly fishing, spin casting, bait bouncing, and pulling plugs. All fishing rods and tackle as well as bait and flies are furnished by the guides.

The guides at Rogue Wilderness Adventures also double as chefs and are experts in the art of riverbank cooking. Fresh steelhead is skinned and smoked with the leaves of nearby Alder trees. Next, the fish is grilled over an open fire for a delectible taste. As the daylight fades, anglers arrive at a welcoming and comfortable wilderness lodge. While the friendly staff at the lodge prepares a delicious, home-cooked and family style meal, guests relax in the rustic seclusion of the lodge and enjoy the comforts of home.

If these aren't enough reasons to take a fishing getaway on the Rogue, the transportation itself should be. In order to provide individualized instruction, there is one guide per boat, and each boat holds only two fishermen. The McKenzie-style drift boats are truly the "Rolls Royce" of river craft. Passengers relax in the luxury of comfortable bucket-type seats with back rests. The guide sits behind where he can give instruction and watch the rod tips for that first bite.

40 Years of Wild and Scenic

In 1968, Congress passed the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act which protected  rivers around the country. Of those rivers, the Rogue River in Oregon was one of the original eight to gain this protection. Since 1968, the Rogue River has been managed jointly by the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service.

The Wild & Scenic portion of the Rogue is only 34 miles of the Rogue’s 215 mile length. The “wild” section starts at Grave Creek (30 miles from Grants Pass, Oregon) to Agness (26 miles from the Pacific Ocean.) Since the wild designation was put in place only 120 rafters are allowed to launch on the river each day. Of the 120 half are private boaters and half are running with a commercial outfitter.

For those that don't have the experience to "run the Rogue", or who lack the proper permit to make the trip, Rogue Wilderness Adventures offers a safe and exciting alternative. The oldest and most recognized outfitter on the Rogue River, Rogue Wilderness Adventures leads single-day to five-day trips in the wild and scenic section. They offer multi- day camp trips and  the option of staying in one of the historic lodges in the canyon.

Operation Turtle Watch

Rogue Wilderness Adventures,  in cooperation with the United States Forest Service, are putting together two fantastic river adventures in the Rogue River canyon of Oregon for the summer of 2008.  Called “Operation Turtle Watch” , rafters will accompany USFS staff biologists down the Rogue River. Participants will help count and check the health of the resident turtle population in this amazing ecosystem.  Western pond turtles are designated as a “sensitive species”. As such,  the agency takes careful steps in its management actions, keeping the wellness of the turtle in mind. It is important that the turtle population be monitored regularly thereby providing an objective measure of how the species is doing. The activity of checking these turtles can be complicated but outrageously fun and exciting.

Each day, participants will float the wild and scenic Rogue River canyon in rafts and inflatable kayaks assisting the biologists. Each evening, the group will camp on the beach and enjoy home cooked meals prepared by expert guides. Space is very limited.
