Survive the Family Adventure Vacation with Expert Travel Advice

In 1996, Cheryl Fleet guided jeep tours through the red rocks of Sedona, Ariz., and about every two hours she saw a new co-ed group of visitors. She noticed, though, a different dynamic a group was all women.

Strangers to each other just two hours early, women bonded easily and often met for lunch after a tour. She noticed that quiet women, who likely have said little in a co-ed group, had plenty to share. While, co-ed groups politely listened to information about Native Americans, the all-women groups showed a keen interest, asked questions, and really understood the native connection to the land.

Fleet opened Canyon Calling, an Arizo ....

More companies catering to solo women travelers

The idea of vacationing solo can be daunting for anyone. It may be particularly intimidating for single women with safety concerns or other worries about being alone in a foreign land.

But that's no excuse to stay at home.

Web sites specializing in women's travel offer a host of opportunities, from luxury travel to rugged outdoor adventures. Most of the sites were founded by women for women, and many seek to create a safe environment that allows women to form bonds of friendship while seeing the world.

Canyon Calling, Adventures for Women

Based in Sedona, Arizona, Canyon Calling was founded in 1996 by native New Zealander Cheryl Fleet, making it one of the veteran women's travel companies to "come of age" in the 1990s. Fleet, a former jeep tour guide in Arizona, decided to found the company when she noticed that women on her tours in co-ed groups did not speak up or share their opinions as freely as women in female-only groups.

Fleet started with women-only tours in the Southwestern U.S., and now operates more than a dozen U.S. and international trips every year to destinations as diverse Wy ....

But, after going with Canyon Calling Tours on a seven-day women's adventure tour in August to the Canadian Rockies, I now have a new way to see the world.
