Take a Voyage to the Blank Spaces of the World

Founded in 1987, Adventure Canada was created to bring travelers to Canada's "blank spaces", those areas whose remoteness alone made them special. Over the last twenty years, the guests and team at Adventure Canada have discovered the unique details that make Adventure Canada destinations so unforgettable; from the landscape, wildlife and culture to the history, art and archeology. It is their belief that there is so much to see “beyond the binoculars” that drives them to delve deeper into their favorite places with every expedition and continually seek out new destinations.

Over the last several years, Adventure Canada’s "Environmental Discovery Voyages" have become increasingly popular, taking visitors to polar opposites in the Canadian Arctic and the Antarctic, Greenland and Iceland, exploring the Celtic Fringe of the British Isles, and unlocking the secrets of British Columbia's great coastal rainforests. Adventurers travel by small expedition ship--the best suited mode of transportation for remote exploration. The number of passengers on these voyages runs between 45 and 100, depending on the ship chosen for the journey. The small vessels are a superior method of transport as they allow passengers an opportunity to explore places that are not accessible by larger vessels. In addition, the fleet of Zodiac landing craft permits travelers to visit some of the most remote places imaginable - the key to expeditionary travel.

It is the desire of Adventure Canada to provide visitors with a top-notch team of resource and expeditionary staff. They regularly travel with resource teams of 10 or more on a 100-passenger ship, meaning that passengers get more time and personal interaction with the specialists. This also allows them to cover a wider range of subjects, which makes for a more complete understanding of the areas traveled.

In addition to the voyages each year, Adventure Canada offers a series of specialized departures that focus on the art and culture or the natural history and photography of an area under our “Art is Adventure” and “PhotoWild! Programs”. These are smaller land-based programs that are specifically crafted to allow time for in-depth exploration and discovery with the guides selected for each.

Specialists in Arctic Cruising and Polar Expeditions

The mission of Adventure Canada is to provide visitors with an opportunity to fully experience the arts and life of the Inuit, while at the same time reveling in the glorious landscape they call home.  Throughout the years, they have celebrated a Canadian perspective through their trips that has been educational and enriching for both visitors and team members.  The staff have also had the chance to explore some of the geology, history, and culture of their Polar neighbors in Greenland, and they bring that knowledge along on all expeditions.  Forgetting boundaries, they examine the ebb and flow of daily life in the North and the impact that history has on today’s world.  The greatest treasure on journeys with Adventure Canada remains the local inhabitants who share their own histories and perspectives as participant’s journey through their land.  Whether they are artists or filmmakers, cultural ambassadors or musicians, these native educators leave visitors with an intangible gift that lingers.

Exploring Culture and Sharing Ideas

It is Adventure Canada’s desire to provide a top-notch team of resource and expeditionary staff on every journey. These trips regularly include resource teams of 10 or more on a 100-passenger ship, meaning that participants get more time and personal interaction with the specialists. This also allows them the chance to cover a wider range of subjects, which makes for a more complete understanding of the destinations that the trips include. Calling on major notable writers, artists, musicians, scientists and culturalists to journey with them, Adventure Canada takes the time to explore destinations from a cultural perspective. They delight in the local exchange of ideas with Inuit and other First Nations societies and  venture from time to time into the ancient realms of the old world. On every departure, the staff members are local inhabitants from the trip destinations visited. While all the research in the world may explain certain aspects of a place, someone who lives and works in that destination every day can paint the most complete picture for visitors.

Expeditionary Style Cruising

Adventure Canada's expeditionary style cruises have been bringing people to remote places in Greenland, the East Coast, the Arctic, and Labrador for 20 years.  Adventure Canada is able to bring their clients to these remote places by using small expeditionary vessels, the best suited mode of transportation for remote exploration. The number of passengers on these voyages runs between 45 and 100, depending on the ship chosen for the journey. For the 2008 season, Adventure Canada is using two vessels, the M/S Akademik Ioffe and the M/S Lyubov Orlova. They believe that these small vessels are superior, as they allow travelers the opportunity to gain access to places not accessible by larger vessels. Shore landings are made possible by the use of Zodiacs, allowing passengers the opportunity to visit areas that are otherwise inaccessible.

A Philosophy Of Respect For the World

Adventure Canada is often referred to as an ‘eco-tourism’ company, which in part is true.  “Eco-tourism” (before companies took on the term as a marketing angle) is what adventurers have been doing for millennia – seeking out authentic experiences within the natural environment, leaving the places they visit virtually untouched.  This is what Adventure Canada strives for, but in the purest sense, anyone that travels to a destination on a jet for example, will have an impact on the environment.  Therefore, the team at Adventure Canada prefers to use the term ‘sustainable tourism’ as this is what will allow them to continue to explore remote areas of the world without ruining them for future generations.  They promote a philosophy of respect for the natural and cultural world, with which, by giving access to sensitive areas and sharing this philosophy with travelers, they hope to promote a wider and greater respect and understanding for environmental issues here in Canada and around the world.

In addition, Adventure Canada is proud to announce that in 2008, one of their chartered vessels is introducing ground-breaking green improvements in the shipping industry. Nova Envirocom is outfitting the Lyubov Orlova with a 100% compostable environmentally friendly product to replace all the plastic and Styrofoam based products that are now filling landfills throughout the arctic region.

The remote places that passengers on Adventure Canada’s voyages are able to visit are left virtually untouched and unspoiled. The company strives to aid in the conservation of the ecosystems they visit by leaving the lowest impact possible. Adventure Canada supports the regions they visit by giving back to the communities.  The educational fee that Adventure Canada donates to these regions aids in preserving their natural and cultural integrity.

More Journeys to More Destinations

Adventure Canada is proud to offer a wide range of international destinations. In 2008, they completed their inaugural voyages to Africa on Africa by Private Air and to New Zealand, on New Zealand: Tale of Two Islands. Africa by private air was a very exclusive departure for only 10 travelers with 5-star accommodations and unbelievable wildlife experiences in South Africa, Zambia and Botswana.  New Zealand: A Tale of Two Islands was onboard the 48-passenger Spirit of Enderby and give visitors the opportunity to experience all the beauty and diversity that New Zealand has to offer.

Adventure Canada offers an expedition to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, a voyage that ventures to real Middle Earth while exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site of colonial Quito before continuing on to the islands that are synonymous with Charles Darwin.  As an accompaniment to their Ecuador and Galapagos Islands program, they also offer a 5-night post-trip exploration of Peru, including a visit to Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. In addition to these scheduled voyages each year, Adventure Canada offers a series of specialized departures that focus on the art and culture or the natural history and photography of an area under their “Art is Adventure” and “PhotoWild!” programs. These programs are specifically crafted to allow time for in-depth exploration and discovery with the guides selected for each.
