Press Brief: Praveen Moman, Co-Founder of Volcanoes Safaris Speaks about the Friend a Gorilla Campaign and the Plight of the African Mountain Gorillas

UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority) Praised for “Friend a Gorilla” campaign Connecting Gorillas to the world through the internet

On September 26, 2009, Volcanoes Safaris co-founder Praveen Moman spoke to an audience of over 350 about the new project created by the UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority) called Friend A Gorilla and the plight of the endangered Mountain Gorillas of Africa. This event brought together hundreds of individuals from the industry.

In his address, Praveen Moman who has been involved in Mountain Gorilla conservation for ten years and helped create the first up-market great ape tourism organization in post-conflict Rwanda, spoke about the conservation of the gorillas as they are some of the most endangered species on earth. He pointed out that humans are the biggest threat to the gorillas through the cutting of forests, insensitive development, poaching, bushmeat, logging, disease, and human conflict. His speech served as a call to action before the gorillas are destroyed.

Moman also went on to congratulate the UWA on is new program, Friend a Gorilla. This long term and sustainable program will connect gorillas to individuals around the world via the internet. This new campaign allows people from all over the world to follow specific gorillas living in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest on Facebook or Twitter for a minimum donation of $1. Participants receive updates on their gorilla friends including photos, videos, and GPS coordinates---all data gathered by actual trackers that visit the gorillas each day. Local communities will also benefit from this program as great ape conservation and tourism has a positive effect on local communities.
