CONTACT: Heather Miller TEL: (970) 568-7423 HOUGHTON, Mich.- Isle Royale is special place. It’s an island. It’s a National Park. But those who come here will find more than that: They’ll find an adventure. Rock Harbor Lodge is located on the shores of Lake Superior within Isle Royale National Park. Isle Royale National Park was established in 1940 and the park was designated part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1976, under the Wilderness Act. Today the park remains as an example of primitive America. In fact, over 99% of the land in Isle Royale is designated wilderness. The remote nature of the Isle Royale allows visitors to truly experience wilderness without distraction. The Rock Harbor Lodge, the only hotel on the island, is an ideal setting for special events including family gatherings (weddings, reunions) and corporate retreats. Visitors to Rock Harbor Lodge can enjoy numerous activities including hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and birding. Sightseers and history buffs will enjoy the historic lighthouses, shipwrecks and ancient copper mining sites, while nature lovers will discover plenty of spots to observe moose, otter, loons, beaver, fox and other small mammals that call the island home, and may even hear the howl of the elusive wolves. Experienced Scuba divers can explore the variety of shipwrecks in Lake Superior — some dating back to the late 1800s. Different guided sightseeing tours and cruises are offered daily, giving visitors a chance to see something new each day they spend on the island. Fully-equipped fishing boats are available to charter for groups of at least four, in half-or full day increments. Water taxi services are also available to help gain quicker access to the backcountry or to transport guests and their gear (including canoes or kayaks) to many of the docks on the surrounding islands. The Rock Harbor Marina can accommodate boats up to 65' and canoe, kayak, and motorboats are available for rental by the half-day, day, or week. Rock Harbor Lodge is open mid-May through Mid-September. To book a special event for summer 2010, call (866) 644-2003 or click here to request more information. ### |
